Metcom says..
As the book says: ' Create FrontPage 2000 Web Pages In a Weekend is a hands-on, easy-to-read guide to building a web site you can be proud of.' This book sets out to just that in a ' cut to the quick' style that even the most tentative beginner can, I feel, cope with. The ' in a week-end' bit again, means just that and page 3 of the book has its reader mixing cement as it were with the first chapter entitled:  'Laying the Foundation'and beginning on Friday evening.

It doesn't suggest what time you should begin on Friday evening but I would suggest here and now, early is better than later. The first chapter gives suggestions of what to gather in preparation and making sure that your PC is ready in every aspect i.e. is your modem working? That mind sound pretty basic but this is a book aimed squarely at beginners. Each page in the opening chapter is littered with Tips, Notes, Cautions and Buzz Words. There are even suggestions of where to get additional help and updates from the Web itself. The assumption here is of course, that you already have an ISP (Internet Service Provider)

There are no colour drawings or glossy photos to be found in this book as is the format with most of these Prima style publications. You will find instead, plenty of black and white wysiwyg screen shots which I think more than adequately make up for the lack colour and glamour. The book is littered with humorous anecdotes with things like suggesting when and how to take a break from creating your masterpiece, such as: . ..take a few minutes stretch, walk the dog, maybe grab a carrot stick or two.... apart from entering, formatting and editing basic text, the book deals the best ways to insert graphics such as photographs and other clip art items. By the end of Friday evening (whenever that is?), you will, with very little effort have created your first web page.

I suggest an early start on Saturday morning as the has a full day in store for you beginning with:

  • Importing Other Webs Or Pages
  • Giving Your Pages Personality
  • All About List
  • Getting A Cohesive Look With Themes

This chapter goes into greater detail about dealing with HTML paragraph styles and attributes; formatting paragraphs; applying borders and shading; backgrounds; lists page banners and navigational buttons.

After getting a well deserved snack, as the book suggests, its into Saturday afternoon where the book takes the reader into the hidden mysteries of:

  • All About Hyperlinks
  • Working With Bookmarks
  • Verifying Links
  • Testing Your Work

Saturday is still not over as in the evening the book discusses and demonstrates in words and pictures how to design, create, import, edit Tables; importing data from Excel, Word to a table and editing Frames.

Sunday morning sees us adding those nice little touches such as: Adding a hit counter; a hover button; search form and creating a table of contents. By Sunday afternoon your easy peezy DIY web site will be almost finished as so this penultimate section deals with: Saving and previewing your web site; organizing files; working with reports; making changes to multiple pages and completing web tasks. Sunday evening will take you through creating special effects such as: Text Effects, Transparent drop shadows, creating custom colour palettes and creating 3D effects.

The Appendix deals with those seemingly and apparently complicated and albeit on the face of it, professional tasks of Publishing your pages; Getting visitor feedback with forms; Adding multimedia; Promotional web site tips & tricks and Implementing Special feature's.

Create FrontPage 2000 comes with a packed CD filled with oodles of utilities that will help making and publishing your masterpiece for all the world to see and absolute doddle.

Create FrontPage 2000 Web Pages In a Weekend is 402 pages of easy to use, easy to read and easy to follow reading that takes through every step of creating your very first web site. The only drawback ...... You'll need a copy of FrontPage 2000 but then you knew that anyway.
