They say..... Metcom Says ....... I did not realise it, but Alex Homer lives and works Derbyshire. I don't know why, but I always think of top IT professionals being American! In web developer circles, Alex Homer is well known. In his book, Alex Homer's Professional ASP Web Techniques, he shares some of his favourite Active Server Pages (ASP) tips. Active Server Pages (ASP) are appearing all over worldwide web, not to mention on intranets everywhere. They provide the web developer with a means of creating a site that only has one page, continuously updated from a database. This book is NOT , in this reviewer's humble opinion, for the total beginner. It is clearly aimed at the reader who is already familiar with ASP and general Web development. Further, it is also aimed at the Windows 2000 market. Homer wastes no time, showing how to create dynamic sites, and introduces the concept of a single-page site that relies on database records to produce an unlimited number of pages. All web developers will regale you of tails of the nightmares surrounding cross browser compatibility. Homer's examples of implementing cross-browser compatible framesets and sophisticated line and pie graphs of statistics about your site are both clever and useful. All of the techniques are presented with a balanced combination of screen shots, code snippets, and commentary, all of which are both clear and concise. On this point, I was presently surprised. On a personal note, I have previously had varying experiences with books from this publisher. My usual complaint has been that the screenshots or diagrams were not very clear. This book does not fall into that category. I don't see too many of our computer club members dashing out to buy this book, but, if one is administering a Windows 2000 network with internet server and is required to maintain a regularly updated web site, this book is a must. Using this book as a guide to automating your site with ASP will keep your site up to date. Recommended - But prior knowledge of Active Server Pages is essential.
