Yet
another quality game from the Studios of Looking Glass, the highly awaited sequel to one of the best RPG's of all time .....Yes it's System Shock 2. This sequel sees the rise to power of the evil AI from the first game, Shodan. System shock 2 is a class based RPG game in which you find yourself in a UNN recruitment center and must choose between Marine Corps (Soldier), Navy (Engineer) and the mysterious OSA (Secret Service).

When you start the game you're alone aboard a vessel full of dead bodies, dire warnings scribbled in blood and other omens that mean either 1) you missed one hell of a party, or 2) something's gone terribly, terribly wrong. Your information comes from three sources. Firstly, a series of survivors send you e-mail messages, which play as sound files. Secondly, you find audio logs in which the crew describe their inner thoughts. Thirdly, since your senses have been cybernetically enhanced, you can see the. psychic imprints left by a being's death (or, translated from techy-blurb, ghosts).

You have been implanted with Illegal R-grade cybernetic implants by another survivor, Dr. Politio. She has some vital info for you and says that you must go and visit her on the 4th Deck. But life is never as simple as that, and you must battle your way through enemies and hack your way through Hi-Tech security equipment. But along the way the kind doctor is able to transmit to you, as you complete quests some Cybernetic Upgrade Modules with which you can upgrade your cybernetic implants.

System Shock 2 has many weapons from the puny pistol to the formidable EMP pulse rifle to the Awsome Fusion Cannon. If you choose the OSA you can use PSY powers ranging from simple telekinises to powerful explosive projectiles. There are also a variety of items to help you such as medical hyposprays and tools to repair your weapons. SS2 runs on an improved version of Thief. s Dark Engine, so individual objects make separate noises.

Your foes mutter sinister truths. Screams intermingle with thunderous machine gun fire. The AI, while stunning, is a basic expansion of Thief., so it duplicates the strange inability of foes to climb ladders. All the denizens act according to known stimuli - Can they see you? Can they hear you? - then respond in the correct way.

I can also say that this is probably the most atmospheric game I have ever played. Not since Doom have I actually been frightened by a computer game! Overall this is a well balanced RPG game and is ideal for someone looking for a challange.

Why only 92% well it has a few faults like the AI, the end of the game was probally slighty rushed as towards the end of the game it loses the atmosphere but this doesn't affect the gameplay, and the fact that I was able to complete the game in just under 18 hours, but I intend to first replay the game as one of the alternate player classes and then as a party of soldiers when the multi-player patch comes out.
